Company Profile
Colonial Pipeline Co. is an interstate
common carrier of petroleum products. Each day, we deliver an average of 100
million gallons of gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil, diesel fuel and
national defense fuels to shipper terminals in 13 states and the District of
Columbia.
We accomplish that by safely operating
more than 5,500 miles of steel pipe buried underground. The Colonial system
connects refineries in the Gulf Coast and elsewhere to more than 260 marketing
terminals. This network of our pipelines and terminals operated by our customers
serves communities across the South and Eastern United States.
The Importance of Oil Pipelines
Today, more than 97% of transportation
energy is supplied by petroleum, and pipelines are by far the most important of
the industry’s supply systems. They are also the most efficient: Delivering a
gallon of gasoline from Houston to New York costs approximately 4.5 cents per
gallon.
Pipelines make vital fuels easy to get.
We depend on pipelines to deliver heating oil for our homes, jet fuel for air
travel, diesel fuel for trucks and school buses, fuels for agriculture,
railroads and marine use. Colonial connects directly to several military
installations and to airports across the South and East.
And don’t forget the cars that are part
of our everyday lives. In 2010, Colonial Pipeline Co. delivered nearly 850
million barrels of fuel. That’s nearly 2.3 million barrels every day. (One
barrel equals 42 gallons.)
Petroleum pipelines offer many
advantages. One is providing a steady, dependable supply of fuel.
But all pipelines have a special
responsibility to operate safely. Colonial is proud of its record for protecting
the public and the environment. |
