Colonial Call Before You Dig Numbers | State One-Call Numbers

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, oil pipelines are the safest call before you digmethod of transporting petroleum products. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of pipeline accidents and the injuries that result are due to outside force damage.

To help prevent such accidents from occurring, most states have a one-call notification system service. When an individual calls this number, the one-call center notifies the pipeline company or other buried utility organization. The company then sends a representative to the proposed excavation site to mark the exact location of the buried pipeline or utility.

Excavators and homeowners should use the one-call system before starting any digging project for fences, flagpoles, landscaping, storage buildings, foundations, swimming pools, ground clearing, deep plowing, laying underground pipe or wiring. By taking the time to call, contractors can prevent disruption of service, accidents, injuries and possibly death-not to mention the delay of the project.

The one-call system should be contacted at least 48 hours in advance before digging. In most states, law requires adherence to the one-call procedure.

If you're an excavating contractor or a homeowner using heavy equipment such as mechanical augers, please use the one-call numbers before you start to dig.
