Colonial Pipeline Employees Bag Oysters In Louisiana To Build Coastal Barriers

CAMERON PARISH, La.
- Colonial employees from the Lake Charles & Texas areas volunteered with the Nature Conservancy of Louisiana on June 30, 2017. The volunteers battled the intense heat and humidity of the South Louisiana summer to bag oyster shells.

The team, organized by lead operator Thomas Johnson, created 1,500 bags of oysters during the volunteer activity. The oyster shell bags will be placed in metal frames to construct nearly one mile of artificial oyster reef in the West Cove of Calcasieu Lake.

Thank you to the Colonial team,” said Jennifer Browning of the Nature Conservancy — Louisiana. Everyone we met that volunteered was fantastic! The Colonial team worked so hard despite the heat and humidity and we couldn’t be more appreciative of their effort and camaraderie.

The Nature Conservancy is planning to start installation of the artificial reef on July 10, making the timing of this volunteer event perfect. The artificial reef will create a barrier to protect the coastline and prevent coastal erosion.
