Pipeline Industry Focuses on Protecting and Informing Public, Environmental Stewardship
ATLANTA (April 13, 2004) – Colonial Pipeline today received the pipeline industry’s most distinguished honor for safety, environmental protection and community outreach during the American Pipeline Institute’s annual gathering of the nation’s pipelines.
The Distinguished Safety and Environmental Performance Award, Colonial’s fourth in as many years, comes amid marked improvement by the pipeline industry in safety and environmental protection. Both the number and volume of pipeline spills hit 35-year lows in 2003, federal statistics show.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of the Colonial employees who have heeded the call of the public and the challenge of our fellow pipelines to operate safely and without spills,” said Colonial President and CEO David L. Lemmon.
“There is a rising tide of performance throughout the pipeline industry,” Lemmon added. “This trend has benefited not only the American consumer but has given the communities where pipelines are located a stronger assurance of safety.”
Lemmon credited new regulations set forth in the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002 with improving the industry’s performance. He also acknowledged industry groups like the American Petroleum Institute and the Association of Oil Pipelines for sharing new ideas and strategies that improved the safety of all pipelines. Colonial also benefited from benchmarking with fellow pipeline companies in 2003, Lemmon said.
“Colonial employees are committed to continuous improvement. We are constantly working on ways to make our pipeline safer and more efficient,” Lemmon said.
“Meeting our goal of zero spills is going to take leadership from every level of our company. We must be vigilant and always mindful that we operate for the benefit of and with the permission of the American public.”
Awards were presented at the API’s Pipeline Conference in New Orleans and recognized performance during 2003.
Colonial, whose headquarters are in suburban Atlanta, is privately-held by six owners: CITGO Pipeline Co., Conoco Pipe Line Co., HUTTS LLC., Koch Capital Investments, Phillips Petroleum International Investment Co., and Shell Pipeline Co.
Founded in 1962, Colonial Pipeline extends from Houston to the New York harbor and delivers a daily average of 96 million gallons of gasoline, home heating oil, diesel fuel, kerosene, commercial jet fuel and fuels for the U.S. military.
