Colonial Pipeline proudly accepted the 2025 API Distinguished Pipeline Safety Award for a large operator, awarded today by the American Petroleum Institute in Aurora, Colo.

“At Colonial, safety is deeply embedded in our culture and is a prerequisite for doing business in the communities where we work and live,” said Colonial President & CEO Melanie Little. “This award is a testament to the dedication and work that more than 1,000 Colonial team members do every day to safely meet our mission.”

The API Distinguished Pipeline Safety Award recipients are selected annually by midstream peers to recognize operators’ commitment to safety, community engagement, and advancing a zero-incident culture.

API cited Colonial’s use of emerging technologies and strong integrity management practices, including our advancement of leak detection through academic partnerships that evaluate emerging technologies, such as high-resolution sensors.

“Pipelines are essential infrastructure—they move the energy that powers our economy and support American families every day,” said API President and CEO Mike Sommers. “Our members are strengthening environmental performance, advancing technology, working with communities and helping set the global standard for safety.”

This is the third time since 2019 that Colonial has received the API Distinguished Pipeline Safety Award, with this most recent honor being our first in the large operator category.
