Colonial Pipeline Holds Inaugural STEM Work Day Program

Children learn about science, technology, engineering and math at the headquarters of the largest refined products pipeline in the United States

ALPHARETTA, GA. (July 30, 2019) – Colonial Pipeline Company held its first STEM Work Day Program at the company’s corporate office on Thursday, July 18, 2019. The program was designed to help children understand how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are an integral part of Colonial’s business of safely transporting gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and home heating oil to supply the Southern and Eastern United States.

More than 30 children were part of the program, which featured presentations and activities led by Colonial employees, including pipeline integrity engineers, pipeline control engineers, energy management and power optimization engineers, and others in finance. A highlight of the event was a robot building competition, where teams were tasked with building and learning to control a robot to compete against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge.

Events like STEM day are important because children make friends easily, their comradery carries over to us as employees and builds Colonial’s internal community” said Colonial employee Roy Baker, Technical Operations Center Technician, who accompanied Sabrina Baker, his 11-year-old daughter.

Today I learned that the people at Colonial Pipeline work hard to keep us safe. I got to see what the pipeline does and how everything actually happens. They get smarter every day working here,” said Parker Johnson, 11-year-old son of Colonial employee Michael Johnson, Business Development Coordinator.

The robots will be donated to Cooper Middle School – located near the Colonial right-of-way and its Atlanta Junction facility in Austell, Ga. – for ongoing use in their STEM program. Colonial will be looking into expanding the program to its field locations in the future.
