Our Role in the Supply Chain

Colonial Pipeline’s Role in the Fuel Delivery Supply Chain

Colonial recognizes the critical nature of our system to millions of Americans. We safely deliver approximately 100 million gallons of fuel per day and approximately 36 billion gallons per year to markets across our operational footprint. Our 5,500 mile pipeline network delivers refined products, such as gasoline, from refineries on the Gulf Coast, to end users in the Southeast and along the Eastern Seaboard. Our pipeline system is a safe, efficient and an effective component of the fuel delivery supply chain. Colonial is always focused on safe operations and continuous improvement.

Protecting the environment is a key priority of our company. Pipelines are among the safest, most efficient and most environmentally responsible means to transport refined products. At Colonial, we empower all employees to stop, correct and report any unsafe conditions that jeopardize safety or the environment. This empowerment is promoted across our organization and commitments. We also work with conservation groups across the pipeline system to promote their efforts to protect and restore local habitats.

Colonial Pipeline has a dedicated safety culture, including a Safety Management System throughout the company that focuses on continuous improvement and a systematic approach to pipeline safety management. Our approach includes 11 essential elements for comprehensive and systematic management of safety-related activities, committing to continuous improvement throughout the pipeline system. This culture is widely respected within our industry and has led us to receive recognition from groups such as the American Petroleum Institute.

Our safety culture is not limited to the work our people do, it’s also displayed in our investments in technology to maintain the integrity of our pipeline system. In addition to our investments in IT infrastructure, Colonial Pipeline utilizes innovative technologies to protect the integrity of the system, ranging from aerial patrols to capture optical imagery of the pipeline, to drone technology utilizing thermal sensors to assist in the inspection of tanks and other piping, and even satellite technology to capture data throughout the pipeline system.
