Colonial Press Release

Project Changes And Continued Growth On Horizon For Colonial

ATLANTA, Ga. — Colonial Pipeline Company announced today that the Alabama-Tennessee Expansion Project, a proposed 225-mile pipeline beginning at Talladega, AL and terminating outside of Nashville, TN, would not go forward as it has been proposed. Instead, Colonial is aggressively pursuing other options to supply the growing Tennessee markets.

We are going to expand, just not the way we thought we were going to,” said David Lemmon, Colonial President and CEO. We remain committed to addressing the growing need for refined petroleum products in this and other Southeast markets. Even while Colonial is evaluating several other types of expansion into Nashville, our active expansion efforts into Chattanooga and Knoxville continue.”

Phase I of Colonial’s Knoxville expansion, scheduled for completion this August, will provide an estimated 25,000 barrels per day additional petroleum products for Knoxville and 40,000 barrels per day for Chattanooga (1 barrel = 42 gallons). This initial Phase I effort is the beginning of future Colonial expansion to Chattanooga and Knoxville. Additional details will be announced when available.

The application submitted to the Bureau of Land Management for permitting of the Alabama-Tennessee expansion project will likely be cancelled. Colonial remains fully supportive of the National Environmental Policy Act process that would have included preparation of an environmental impact statement, as we believe that an open, public process is a benefit,” stated Susan Castiglione, Colonial’s Senior Manager, Corporate and Public Affairs.

Colonial, headquartered here, transports liquid petroleum products from Houston and Gulf Coast refineries to New York, serving the South and East Coast with over 5,500 miles of pipeline.
